On October 28, 2025, Hurricane Melissa struck Jamaica as a Category 5 storm with winds reaching 185 mph, making it the strongest hurricane in the nation’s history. The devastation was immense: over 100 lives lost, 141 injured, 29 missing, and damages exceeding $10 billion. Communities across western Jamaica—including Hanover, St James, Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, and Manchester—were among the hardest hit. Homes were flattened, crops destroyed, and vital infrastructure such as power, water, and communications severely disrupted.

The Human Impact

•          90,000 households displaced and more than 190,000 buildings damaged.

•          Families are living in temporary shelters, schools, and community centres, often without reliable access to clean water or electricity.

Behind these numbers are stories of resilience and heartbreak. Elderly residents, children, and vulnerable families are bearing the brunt of this disaster, facing daily uncertainty about food, shelter, and safety.

Global Solidarity

The tragedy has sparked international support. Aid organizations like the British Red Cross and delegations from countries such as Ethiopia have stepped forward to assist recovery efforts. Yet, the scale of destruction means that long-term rebuilding will require sustained commitment from charities, governments, and individuals alike.

How CMUG Charity Is Responding

At CMUG Charity, we believe in community-driven recovery. Our mission is not only to provide immediate relief but also to empower affected families with tools for rebuilding their lives. Here’s how we’re stepping in:

•          Emergency Relief: Supplying food and clean water.

•          Supporting Children: Providing educational materials and safe spaces so learning can continue despite the disruption.

How You Can Help

Your support makes a difference. Here are ways to stand with us:

•          Donate: Every contribution goes directly to relief and rebuilding efforts.

•          Volunteer: Join our teams on the ground or assist with fundraising and awareness campaigns.

•          Spread the Word: Share this message to amplify the call for solidarity.

Looking Ahead

Hurricane Melissa is a stark reminder of the growing intensity of climate-related disasters. As we rebuild, we must also advocate for resilient infrastructure, sustainable practices, and stronger disaster preparedness. Together, we can ensure that communities are not only restored but made stronger for the future.

CMUG Charity stands with Jamaica, and all communities affected by Hurricane Melissa. With action, and unity, we can turn tragedy into hope.
